Chocolate is believed to have been first grown as a crop in the Amazon rainforest. Circulating throughout the Mayan empire and the with the Aztecs, chocolate was drank as a bitter and spicy drink that was an acquired taste.

Chocolate makes its way with Columbus all the way to Spain, but there is not much interest.

Cortez again brings chocolate to Spain, but this time they blend it with sugar, vanilla, nutmeg and other spices, creating demand for the tasty drink.
